Venus Retrograde

On the eight-year synodic cycle of the brightest wandering star in the sky

Venus goes retrograde five times every eight years, repeatedly covering the same zodiacal territory over the course of one lifetime. With every successive eight-year repetition, the stations occur 2-3 days and 2-3 zodiacal degrees earlier than the previous time.

On July 25th this year, transiting Venus will station retrograde at 0 Virgo 46, its last station in tropical Virgo in our lifetime. It will move backward through tropical Leo, stationing direct at 14 Leo 23 on September 6th. Eight years ago, in 2007, Venus stationed retrograde on July 27th at 2 Virgo 57, and stationed direct on September 8th at 16 Leo 35.

Past Phases

During the summer of 2007, the last time Venus was retrograde in Leo, Saturn was also transiting through that sign. This time around, Jupiter and Mars will be joining the Venus rx in that sign. Did the summer of 2007 represent endings or disappointments for you? Or were you initiating some slow process that is only now starting to really live up to its promise?

Venus was also retrograde in the Virgo-to-Leo phase during the summers of 1999, 1991, 1983, 1975, 1967, and 1959. Prior to that, the retrograde passed through tropical Virgo only. Depending on your age and recollection of your personal chronology, you might be able to piece together a major theme that spans your life, but especially surfaces at these intervals.

Disrupting Consensus

Venus in the retrograde phase disrupts consensus, and introduces subversive elements to the existing order. It marks periods where certain lives change at an accelerated pace, and crucial pivots in destiny are reached.

From a geocentric perspective, Venus decelerates prior to retrograde stations and accelerates following direct stations. In an astrological context, the reason Venus retrogrades are so powerful, is because the planet is changing speed. When it slows down to make a station, it commands tremendous power, like a Saturn or a Pluto.
