Forty-seven year-old actor Burt Lancaster wins the Best Actor Oscar for his title role as the paradoxical con man preacher in Elmer Gantry.  Lancaster also co-produced the movie with director Richard Brooks, as an independent company. Of the part, he says, his performance “wasn’t really acting…I was, in essence, playing myself.”

Transiting Neptune is conjunct Lancaster’s natal Sun in Scorpio, while transiting Saturn in Capricorn is square the transiting Sun in Aries, and natal Neptune in Cancer, signifying blurred lines between an actor’s on-and-off screen personality. Transiting Mars is conjunct natal Mars in Cancer, reflecting the Academy’s current preference for the strong male type.
